Why does Jonas find the instruction about lying so disturbing?

Because he had grown up not to lie. It was a part of learning not to lie. In one way it is good that they can’t lie, because then the community can know if the citizens are telling the truth.

When he was a four he said that he was starving. His teacher corrected him and said that he was hungry. No one in the community was starving. Is would be a lie to say that you wore starving. The community once wanted the babymakers to try to make 4 babies instead of 3, but the giver said that they had to think that there would be more mouths to fill if everyone wouldn’t be starving.

No one in the community lied but Jonas has an idea that some parent’s are lying. So to find out if that was true he asks his dad if he loved him. His dad said that he loved him. Then his father said” Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please.” Page 127. His father thought that it was inappropriate to ask some one if they loved you or the word love. The word love was a generalized word to use his mom said. Jonas liked the felling of love but he was confused about the word love. He has had the filling love for Fiona that is way he had to start taking the stirring pills. Which was lying to the rules. One day Jonas didn’t take the pills for four. He didn’t want to take the pills because he was curious on what the result would be not taking the pills. He started to have sexual feelings and was hoping he would be in a relationship with someone.

In this passage he lied “ Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?” mother asked. Jonas nodded. “Yes, thank you, I do,” he replied slowly. It was his first lie to his parents.” Page 127. This showed that it was his first lie and that he didn’t understood the in appropriates of the word love.
